Atmospherically evoking tempo doeloe , or the old days
TUGU KUNSTKRING PALEIS
offers richly atmospheric dining in a wonderfully maintained former colonial office–and a glimpse of Indonesian grandeur.
Ornate, golden chandeliers hang over the main dining room, which is dominated by an immense painting, done by the owner, Anhar Setjadibrata, depicting a famous scene from Indonesian history, the arrest of Prince Diponegoro.
Several tables standing on a marble dias lend a regal feel to the space. While an excellent menu of local and Western entrees is on offer, Kunstkring’s rijstaffel, or rice table, is the rightfully beloved crowd-pleasing favorite.
Inspired by a Dutch East Indies traditional feast, a half-dozen-or-so servers, dancing to festive gamelan music, deliver a bevy of dishes to your table pallenquin style.
After dining, a well-curated selection of Italian and French wines as well as Cuban cigars can be savoured in the restaurant’s Suzie Wong Lounge, with hard-wood floors and a decor of Chinoiserie that includes classic Indonesian hand-painted posters for the film that gives the space its name. (cr)
